Transport and Change Management in SAP Systems
Erroneous and/or inadequately checked transport requests are a frequent reason for having to reset the SAP system. The result: unnecessary and costly downtimes.
In order to avoid these costs, TransportManager offers an efficient and secure management of your transports within a complex multi-system and multi-client SAP landscape.
This workflow-based solution is extremely flexible and highly automated while at the same time guaranteeing secure and simple operation. Request objects are automatically checked for a self-defined list of critical objects and additional security-critical aspects. Electronic signatures ensure that only adequately checked requests are actually transported. Furthermore, the object lists of different requests are checked for collisions. TransportManager thus provides simple support for the avoidance of the much-feared “version mismatches”. Information on upcoming approvals, completed transports and erroneous imports is automatically dispatched via e-mail.
Workflow-Monitoring
The workflow monitor is of central importance within TransportManager, allowing for a global view of all transports.
A differentiated authorization concept / electronic approval concept permits targeted processing of approval requests. Here, anyone involved can optionally be briefed on upcoming tasks via SAP Office Mails or, if implemented, via e-mail. However, the procedure does not end with a completed import. It also includes the notification of everyone involved, for instance, in the case of error.
Package definition
Members of the application department are normally not interested in individual transport requests (technical view). They have a more logical view on changes, e.g. they have a look on a certain functionality or even on a complete business process. In general these logical units consists of several transport requests. These requests can be assigned to a package and thus can be treated as one unit during the approval process. This ensures the consistent and complete approval of all transport requests that are relevant to the business process and is very helpful especially for a consistent going-live of the new process.
Check for critical objects
Quality assurance is a core function of TransportManager. In many projects, those involved are often overwhelmed with the multitude and complexity of transport requests. And this is why TransportManager includes an optional automated check for specific critical security and quality aspects and the corresponding control of the workflow according to the respective classifications.
Depending on the settings, a check for critical objects can be performed globally (across all systems) and, at the same time, with respect to specific systems. These system-specific object checks have a higher weighting than those that were defined globally.
Collision detector
TransportManager can perform optional checks to determine whether potential object collisions can be found in the different requests of the TM workflow (problem of version mismatches). If collision detection is activated, the requests in a workflow are checked for equal or overlapping objects with every granting or withdrawal of approval signatures. If the corresponding settings were specified, different reactions can be triggered within TransportManager once potential collisions are detected – from the notification of the responsible administrator to the blocking of upcoming transports.
System requirements
TransportManager is an ABAP/4 only development and can thus be deployed for any platforms and databases that support the utilization of a SAP basis system, respectively a SAP web application server.. The transport tools are started directly on the respective target system via Remote Function Call (RFC). If several transport directories are used, the transfer of all required files is automatically initiated. The installation itself consists of nothing more than the import of a few SAP transport requests into the affected SAP systems. Minimum requirement for TransportManager 5.0 is a SAP system with basis release 4.6 C or above.
