Impact Analysis
Configuration Management / Business Process Management

Today, even the smallest component can have a huge effect on increasingly complex IT structures. It is quite possible that a malfunctioning printer could bring an entire company to a standstill.
The objective is to determine to which extent the interruption or failure of an object will affect a specific business process. This is where the impact analysis comes in: it determines the impact of a problem and provides a basis for emergency planning.

Challenges in the practice

A common problem here is that many companies fail to make the connection between business requirements and their IT operations. This makes it hard to obtain an uninterrupted vertical view of their business processes. As a result, it is very difficult to find and adjust important business performance indicators. Another consequence is that it becomes impossible to automatically and consistently monitor every single performance indicator. This means that certain analysis values cannot be obtained automatically, which in turn often forces administrators to manually enter them. Unfortunately, they can’t always keep up with the fast pace of real life. This has an adverse effect on the status of the affected business process and prevents companies from carrying out an effective impact analysis.

Impact analysis with theGuard!

The objective of an impact analysis is to automatically (as far as possible) collect current key performance indicators and to permanently monitor business processes. theGuard! Business Service Manager has the technology needed to automatically extract this data. This includes technical as well as business-related data from ERP systems. The collected data is then normalized and maintained in the CMDB. Business process that were modeled with theGuard! Business Process Manager are based on the "real-time value" of every single performance indicator. REALTECH's proprietary "VAA" (Visual Assisted Analysis) method of visualization helps companies easily determine the relationships between components and visually represent them. The resulting information can then be used to facilitate the analysis of root causes and to better assess risks as part of a company's change management.
